Library Skills in Development

Early on in my schooling, I discovered the abundance of professional development resources.  I'm so glad to have been able to attend virtual conferences while in school.  Since then, I've been keenly trying to plan out the next steps for how to develop my skills without becoming overwhelmed with how many resources are available.

My current priority sources of learning are:

  • Library Association Conferences

  • Online Courses

  • Volunteer Opportunities

My classmates made this experience so much better.  We completed a few real life, high stress scenarios in a group work setting to practice the skills for how to provide mental health first aid.  The 6 steps are easy to follow and highly recommended for everyone to learn about!

This course will always have a special place in my heart because of the interaction with amazing people, was a great compliment to my school reference course and provided such useful techniques to bring to a Reference Interview.

The different types of communities was amazing to learn about.  In week 11, we learned:

  • mythic (shared values),

  • sited (unity based on goals),

  • temporary invented (one time feeling of unity) and

  • ongoing invented communities.

Community building skills is something I'm eager to develop as time goes on.

This course was an excellent learning opportunity, I highly recommend it.
